We asked Judith Kaufman, an authority on doggie daycare, what to look for in a day care center. Kaufmanwho has managed day care centers for the San Francisco SPCA and for Best Friends Pet Resorts and Salons in Norwalk, Connecticut, suggested that prospective day camp clients keep these points in mind:

How clean is it?
Are urine and feces promptly cleaned away (and the soiled area  disinfected)? Are toys cleaned and sterilized regularly?

Are there any hazards in the environment?
Slippery floors, sharp objects, and small or breakable toys can cause injuries.

Will your dog be outside or inside?
Indoor facilities are generally easier to keep clean and are more escape-proof than outdoor ones. If your dog will be outdoors, look for fencing that is at least six feet high and that extends into the ground; this prevents diggers and jumpers from escaping.

Is there a veterinarian on call?
It's also a good idea to ask if the staff has been trained in CPR.

What is the screening process?
Many daycare centers will interview you about your dog and his history to find out his personality, likes and dislikes, and behavioral quirks or problems. If your dog has a history of biting or aggression, he may be turned away or referred to a trainer before being allowed to join the group.

How much training do the staff members have, and what are their credentials?

How are newcomers introduced?
Is a new dog thrown into the group right away? Kaufman will often put a new dog in a wire playpen first and let the group come up and sniff the newcomer.

Are there "time-out" areas?
Look for pens where staff can separate out dogs in case of trouble.

Is there sufficient space and supervision for the dogs?
If dogs are crammed together, even a high ratio of staff to dogs may not be enough to prevent problems.

Does the center require that dogs be vaccinated and either spayed or neutered? Vaccinations should be a standard requirement. Spayed or neutered pets generally make for a more harmonious group
