Including puppy in the family photo.
When you are ready to take a family photo, plan ahead if you want to include puppy. His attention span is brief at best. Having everything else ready before you bring in your puppy and making the photo session as short as possible will be most productive.
Think about the photo you want to take, but think in general terms. Have several options in mind just in case puppy won’t sit where you put him or would rather sit in someone’s lap than on the floor. Be flexible and be prepared to utilize all your resources of patience. Puppy may have no clue about what you want. Some are smart and know what you want but aren’t ready to give it. Be persistent. A quick play session will deplete some of the excess energy and encourage cooperation.
Do any major grooming for your puppy the day before. A bath, drying, brushing, styling, etc., often excites puppy. Exercise him prior to the session, this may help him to be more attentive to your commands. Maintaining a calm atmosphere prior to the photo session helps.
Use a natural or other constant source of lighting. Flash photography always produces “red-eye” in dogs.
Limit the distractions. Short attention span is easily diverted, so either take the photo in your home or choose a quiet, secluded spot.
Your puppy may be a natural poser. If not, think of ways to get that perfect expression. Take along toys and treats, squeakies and favorites. Have any humans in the photo be prepared for a snap at any moment.
