Dogs either love or hate the water. Those who love it will enjoy swimming, playing in the shallows, or even splashing around in a plastic pool. Discovering that love may take a little coaxing.
During warm months, provide a small plastic pool with a water level appropriate for your puppy’s size. He may decide this is a huge water bowl and be reluctant to get in. Encourage your puppy by stepping into the pool yourself. Sit down in it if you can, and let your puppy sit on your lap. Take a toy into the pool and make a game of the time. If puppy is water-inclined, he will soon be in the pool more than you care to dry him off.
The first trip to the lake or pond may be scary for your puppy. Make sure the water is safe, watch for broken glass and torn metal, and if the water is deep or you go out on a boat, put a life vest on your puppy. Swimming is hard work. If your puppy tires, he might drown before you know he’s struggling. With a life vest, he can float.
If you have a pool and invite your puppy in for a swim, watch his skin for too much chlorine exposure. Rinse his coat thoroughly to prevent dry skin.
