Male Verses Famale Poodles
When trying to decide on a new Toy Poodle, many people ask us about the differences between the Male and the Female. In our opinion, there are no distinct differences that would make one a better pet over the other.
Personality wise, there are no specific differences between the male & female toys. The Toy Poodle has such a wonderful, loving, sweet personality that it's difficult to distinguish any differences on gender alone. There are sometimes subtle differences between littermates. For example, one puppy may be more outgoing, more of a little clown or rascal, running full speed ahead to check on new situations, whereas another puppy may be a bit more reserved and tend to check out things more slowly (be a bit more of a Mama's baby) when new situations are encountered. The differences are based on the individual puppie's personality rather than Gender.
We have seen hundreds of toy poodle puppies and by watching them play and interact with each other and our permanent houseguests (Other poodles, Golden Retrievers, Cats, and children) you cannot tell the males from the females by which one is aggressive, passive, playful, or laid-back.
Asthetically speaking, the males & females are both very beautiful and charming. Some people are afraid that little boys shouldn't be groomed as pretty or wear bows in their hair...but On the Contrary, Male toys can and should wear bows & get all dressed up, just like the ladies. Blue, Green, Purple, Black & Red are wonderful colors for boys. Keep in mind that in nature, the most beautiful and colorful gender of nearly every species (except humans of course!) is the Male!
Neuter / Spay Surgery: It is highly reccomended to have your pet spayed or neutered. This surgery is normally performed at about 6 months of age in both males & females. For females, the Spay surgery is a bit more extensive, considering the uterus is removed. For males, the neuter surgery is considered a much simpler procedure with a very quick recovery time. When spayed, females will no longer have their heat cycles or "period" to deal with. When Neutered, the unpleasant habits that some male dogs have been given a bad reputation for are practically eliminated. Neutered males get along well together and ;make great companions with other males as well as other female Toy Poodles.
